School improvement

School priorities 2017-18


Last year pupils did extremely well and the majority made good and often outstanding progress against their personal targets. We are proud of their achievements.


Teaching and Learning, although a strength, is a priority due to staff movement and newly appointed staff. We have three new teachers to the school from September 2017 and a number of new teaching assistants who will require a thorough induction and training to ensure they meet the needs  of our children.


As the support for school from Local Authorities reduces, we  are  now working with a group of regional special schools on curriculum development and how we measure the progress our pupils make across all key stages. This  will also include joint INSET days and school to school support. By working collaboratively with other similar schools we will be able to draw on expertise from each other.


The school has grown both in numbers of staff and pupils. To continue to provide  best practice in all that we do, our capacity to provide in house training  must be increased and this will be a priority for next year with more staff trained to deliver across a wide range of  areas.


We plan to continue with the learning from home initiative started last year. We also will maintain our  procedures for good attendance with an attendance target next year of 92%


The budget is extremely tight this year and we will continue to look for additional sources of funding


As always, we will review and improve where needed what we do to ensure our very special children have the best education possible.

School priorities for 2016-17 


After a large increase in school numbers last year, Governors have remained firm on keeping the school full at 136. If our school grows any larger, we will start to lose all the wonderful facilities we have! Sadly we cannot meet the ever growing demand for places.


Last year we did a great deal of work on assessments and breaking down the skills in a ‘P’ level into very small steps. We now have a system that really works well for us and helps with assessments and next steps in learning. Other special schools in the region have visited to see our assessments and pupils’ books.


This year all of our assessments are being moved onto a new software. This means that we will have even more accurate data available termly enabling staff to plan more effectively, set challenging targets, inform next steps and include intervention strategies in their teaching.


Teaching and Learning is a strength of the school. The drive towards excellence will continue with the school ensuring all staff continue to receive appropriate training. As well as supporting teaching and learning, we provide a wide range of in house training in a number of different areas such as Behaviour Management, Moving and Handling, Makaton and Child Protection.
